Lead ammunition: our letter to The Independent

LeadletterDear Sir,

As with alcohol there is no agreed safe level of lead in our diet. Toxicology specialists at the Food Standards Agency (FSA) have researched the risks posed by eating game killed with lead shot. Their advice, similar to that for a range of other foods such as tuna, was published in 2012.

Human health toxicology specialists are not ignoring our health. (Shooting: Government set to ignore calls to ban lead shot over health fears - 20th February). It is bizarre that anyone, including the Lead Ammunition Group (LAG), should suggest otherwise.

Yours

✓ Our conservation initiatives for the Biodiversity Action Plan species - the grey partridge, black grouse and brown hare

✓ Our work which engages with government and its agencies over countryside and wildlife policies

✓ Building our education programme so that the public appreciate the importance of managing the countryside not simply protecting it

✓ Our studies on songbirds to determine the importance of predators

✓ Our research on wild brown trout which is investigating whether or not fish stocked into rivers and streams improve the wild population
