Farming and wildlife

Date: 27 March 2012
Vanue:  The Downs Barn, Sompting, nr Brighton
Time:  10:30am - 4pm

The course will look at how modern farming and farmland wildlife can co-exist (with the help of the Stewardship scheme) and how in fact both cannot really survive without each other.

Learn About:

  • What crops are grown and what they are used for
  • What are Pesticides and are they harmful to Wildlife?
  • Why have many species associated with farmland declined and can we reverse these declines – or is it a lost cause? Take a closer look at some species to see what they require to flourish once again.
  • How can a farmer best use the Government Stewardship scheme to help farmland wildlife and the farm?

We will go out onto the farm and take a closer look at the crops – including those grown for us, for animal feed and for wildlife. The farm walk will also point out some of the spring wildlife that we can spot at this time of the year. There will be ample opportunities to ask questions throughout this informal day!
