In the 1980s we ran a series of trials asking farmers to reduce the sprays along the 6 metre crop margin - the headland.
The results were astonishing; arable flowers that had been lost for a generation re-appeared, insect abundance increased and consequently young partridge chicks survived as well as they had in pre-war days.
On very light land EF9 Conservation headlands which permit ferlilizer will give good results, but ELS option EF10 Conservation Headlands with no fertilizer is a very high conservation value option on arable farmland.
Try them - not only are they good for wildlife, but in early summer look stunning. For more advice about headlands and field margins please contact our advisory department or refer to our conservation headland information.
