The DOC  tunnel trap is a very effective spring trap designed for the Department of Conservation (DOC) in New Zealand.  The DOC 200 trap has been approved for use in the UK to catch grey squirrels, rats, stoats and weasels.  The trap must be set in the tunnel provided by the manufacturer for use in the UK. 

This is a powerful trap, and in combination with its tunnel, it kills very humanely.  The tunnel has mesh baffles to prevent the entry of larger non-target species, and to guide the target animal into the best position for a humane strike.  A small secondary spring underneath the trip-plate prevents small rodents from tripping it.  Despite its power, the DOC 200 is easy to set because it is fixed into its tunnel, providing ample purchase.  There is no need at any time to put your fingers at risk!

This trap has been shown to meet humaneness standards proposed under trade agreements between the EU and other countries.  Although we do not know whether these standards will be adopted unaltered by the EU, this tunnel trap can be considered more ‘future proof’ than most alternatives.  We have much to learn about adapting the use of this trap to UK conditions and we therefore hope that users will be happy to be contacted by GWCT scientists to report on their findings.
