Aquatic research at The Allerton Project

Our aquatic research includes monitoring of water quality in our field drains and streams so that we can improve our understanding of the issues associated with improving the aquatic environment.

A large part of our work focuses on phosphorus as this is the main nutrient limiting plant growth in freshwater.  High concentrations lead to major disruption to the freshwater ecosystem through physical effects of shading and through depletion of oxygen.  Sediment also has a physical effect, for example on trout spawning habitat.

We are investigating ways of addressing this issue outside the cropped area, while simultaneously exploring the potential for improving conditions for wildlife.
