Basic electro-fishing

Salmon and Trout Research Centre, East Stoke, Dorset

ElectrofishingThis two day course based at our Salmon and Trout Research Centre at East stoke in Dorset will be led by Bill Beaumont who has over 30 years experience of fishing in habitats ranging from mountain tops to lowland rivers. He is the author of the Environment Agency "Guidelines for Electric Fishing Best Practice".

The course is aimed at people who use electric fishing to catch fish and will cover all the requirements of the National Occupational Standards section FM4 "Catch fish using electro fishing techniques".

General course objectives are: -

  • The promotion of Best Practice for using electricity to sample fish
  • To promote safe practice in equipment use
  • To promote fish welfare

To explain appropriate combinations of equipment components and output settings for use under a range of conditions and operational objectives, in order to achieve good capture efficiency and minimal damage to fish.

The course will include sections on: -

  • Health & Safety
  • The equipment used
  • Setting up equipment
  • The main factors influencing the effectiveness of electric fishing
  • Fish welfare & electric fishing
  • Experience of hands-on practical fishing

The course will have a written exam and attendees will receive a certificate of competence. The course costs £235 inc. VAT.
