Managing woodland for butterflies, game and other wildlife

Joint events organised by the GWCT and the Butterfly Conservation

    Venue:  West Dean Gardens, West Dean, Chichester, West Sussex PO18 OQZ
    Time:  10am to 1.30pm - lunch provided

Dr Dan Hoare from Butterfly Conservation and Peter Thompson from the GWCT will  lead a walk on the West Dean estate to discuss woodland management for pheasants, butterflies and wildlife in general.  We will discuss coppicing, ride clearing, skylighting and take a look at grants and how to create markets for timber.  We will also see some chalk grassland management for the rare Duke of Burgundy butterfly.

    Venue:  The Agricultural Museum, Brook. The Street, Ashford, Kent TN25 5PF
    Time:  10am to 1.30pm - lunch provided

Dr Dan Hoare from Butterfly Conservation, Peter Thompson from GWCT and Dan Tuson from Natural England will lead a walk on the Crundale Estate to discuss managing farmland and woodland for game and wildlife.   We will look at how the estate combines a variety of aims including arable farming, game management for pheasant and partridge, woodland management  for woodfuel and habitats for butterflies, farmland birds and other wildlife.

No fee, buffet lunch provided. Please bring appropriate clothing and footwear for an outdoor farm visit.
