The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) are delighted to announce that they are partnering with Eley Hawk to launch a new cartridge to support the work of the charity. The Eley 12 Gauge Grand Prix Traditional Bismuth Pro-Eco 28g 5 shot load will launch on 19 September and be available online and in stores across the UK. Two pence from every cartridge sold will be donated to the GWCT.
The GWCT shares many common goals with Eley Hawk including the use of scientific research to underpin sustainable conservation practice, the conservation of landscape, habitat and wildlife and improving the biodiversity of the countryside to name just a few.
Eley Hawk is a brand with nearly 200 years of expertise in manufacturing the finest clay and game cartridges and stands unmatched in the UK in relation to its innovative components. From its humble beginnings in London to becoming a globally recognised brand, their commitment to cutting-edge technology and batch-to-batch consistency ensures that it remains "the perfect choice" for every scenario. And their continued dedication to sustainability and innovation makes it the perfect match for the GWCT, aligning with their commitment to responsible game management and conservation.
The cartridge itself, the Eley 12 Gauge Grand Prix Traditional Bismuth Pro-Eco 28g 5 shot load is designed to be the most environmentally conscious cartridge available on the market, suitable for all types of guns. Eley has expertly combined hard-hitting bismuth shot with their renowned Pro-Eco wad—the UK’s first and only fully certified dissolvable, compostable, and marine-friendly eco wad.
This cartridge is loaded into a true 2½ inch (65mm) case with a roll turnover top, making it ideal for all guns, from classic old English shotguns to modern over-and-under models. The blend of traditional design and aesthetics with environmentally friendly, industry-leading components results in unrivalled performance. Perfect for Grouse, Partridge, and Pheasant shooting, this load offers both ethical and effective shooting, ensuring you get the most out of your game season while staying committed to conservation.
Eley Hawk’s Managing Director, Roderigo Crespo-Barreda says: “At Eley Hawk, we believe that the future of shooting lies in our ability to innovate while preserving the environment in which we have the pleasure of adventuring. That's why we're incredibly proud to partner with the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust on the launch of our new Eley VIP Bismuth Pro-Eco 28g 5 load. This cartridge represents the pinnacle of environmentally conscious design, combining our hard-hitting Bismuth shot with the UK's first fully certified dissolvable and compostable Pro-Eco wad. This partnership underlines our commitment to safeguarding wildlife and their habitats, ensuring that both our sport and the natural world can thrive for generations to come. We're excited to see the positive impact this collaboration will have on the shooting community.”
Mike Swan, GWCT Senior Advisor, says: “GWCT are delighted to be partnering up with Eley Hawk as they have been real leaders in the switch away from lead. I have used Eley Bismuth for virtually all of my wildfowl shooting since the mid-1990s and been very happy with the results. More recently I have used Pro-eco wad cartridges for a wide range of quarry and been very impressed with their performance and biodegradability, so I have every confidence in the new Eley VIP Bismuth Pro-Eco 28g 5 load.
“Meanwhile it is great to think that the users of these new cartridges from Eley will be supporting the GWCT’s research and helping us to understand how to stem biodiversity declines.”

About the GWCT – Offering Hope for the future of Wildlife
For nearly 100 years the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust has been a champion for wildlife through an evidence-led approach to conservation. From waders to woodland birds, game management to farmland ecology, wild salmon to pollinators and black grouse to moorland conservation – the breadth of research carried out by the GWCT makes it unique.
Through sound advice and support the GWCT helps farmers, land managers and conservationists across the UK succeed in their mission to enhance the British countryside.
The GWCT believes that wildlife can thrive if we focus on integrating it alongside other land uses, and that game management can be both sustainable, improve biodiversity and aid species recovery.
More than 70% of the UK is made up of farmland - by following GWCT guidelines farms have for example shown they can double their songbird numbers and remain just as productive as before.
