Shooting for the Future

Loddington shootBASC and the GWCT jointly deliver a fantastic course several times a year, aimed at improving shooting skills and shoot management while learning about the latest best practice in predator control, cover crops and game bird releasing.

The shooting element of this course is intended for anybody who shoots, and is designed to improve technique and therefore success in the field. The habitat management component will help anybody who is releasing pheasants for shooting, whether DIY or professional shoot managers.

The course begins with an interactive session discussing the issues surrounding poor performance in the field, and the factors responsible for it. There will then be a number of practical activities including a shooting skills exercise, range-judging and a patterning workshop. BASC shotgun coaches will work with each group on their individual shooting skills.

Recent GWCT research has led to the development of guidelines for gamebird releasing that maximise broader conservation benefit while minimising any damage caused by the birds themselves. Following the best practice guidelines, utilising predator control and planting the optimal cover crops will help shoots to maintain the health and welfare of their birds, ensuring good returns and high quality sport. These issues will be addressed, followed by a visit to a working shoot, to see how to put the guidelines into practice.

Testimonials

“The high standard of presentations and coaching reinforced my opinion that conservationists and game shooters are very well represented by GWCT and BASC, who do so much for the environment and their membership, which is open to all.” –  IW, chartered surveyor, chartered environmentalist

“Fantastically informative for someone with little experience of game shooting. Such better value than an hour’s private lesson at the local clay ground, plus the proceeds go to a worthy cause.” – Mr C

“BASC and GWCT have put together an excellent course giving me much to think about, and techniques to help improve my shooting. All staff were extremely friendly with a wealth of experience in all forms of shooting. Very much looking forward to my next course.” – Mr S

“We were both new to shooting and believe that all new certificate holders would benefit from this early insight if they intend to shoot quarry. We are certainly more respectful. Thank you for your time. Very well run and informative course and exceptional value.” – Mr and Mrs M
