Don’t let emotion obscure the facts: Our letter on heather burning sent to The Guardian

Friends of the Earth campaigner Guy Shrubsole should not allow emotion to obscure facts (Grouse estates investigated over heather burning, 24th Feb). GWCT research shows that the occasional burning of small sections of heather increases, rather than decreases, both moorland plant and bird communities. The removal of excessive heather also reduces the risk of wildfires. These can ignite large areas of the underlying peat, which results in both the loss of carbon and devastates the local ecosystem. Lastly, there is no compelling evidence that heather burning affects water runoff rates in a river catchment level. If we want to save our precious moors, we must stop perpetuating myths.

Heather Burning

Robin Page wrote an excellent article in the Times (or Telegraph?) a few months ago about the need for controlled heather burning after the moorland fires featured in the news last summer. I wish I had kept a copy. In it he stressed how gamekeepers carrying out 'cool burns' has numerous benefits for wild life as well as preventing heather over growing and causing large moorland heather fires. Perhaps he could be asked to resurrect the article.

I live on Exmoor where heather and gorse burning is regularly seen...as there are sadly no grouse on the moor then clearly the process is executed for the overall benefit of flaura and fauna via the offices of Emoor National Park.

In my opinion there’s not enough burning as it encourages new growth keeps down deer ticks and much more improves habitats for grouse and ptarmigan
