Aberdeenshire Art Competition Winners Day 2021

The 2021 Aberdeenshire art competition winners’ day was held at Finzean Hall on 8th December and was a great day celebrating the art of so many local young talents. Mel Shand, a Finzean based artist has been instrumental in the success of the GWCT Aberdeenshire art competition, is also our main judge and offers a private drawing workshop to the winning secondary artist.

Jayne Robson from Inverurie was the 2021 winning artist in our secondary category with her image of the Great Spotted Woodpecker seen here.  Mel invited Jayne to her studio and as the wife of a gamekeeper and artists there is always lots going on.  Jayne couldn’t have timed her visit any better as Mel’s cat had recently had a litter of kittens, the perfect subject for her private art workshop.

Mel said of Jayne, “She is a truly talented young artist and it was a pleasure to have her … she hasn’t had much experience of drawing from life.  We did some linear continuations ink pen drawing.  They had great fun with the kittens which once settled down for a suckle, offered Jayne the opportunity to really get to know her subject -shown below.

This year’s art competition is open once again. All school aged pupils across Aberdeenshire, Angus & Perth and Kinross are invited to submit a piece of artwork showing their favourite species of British game or wildlife in its natural habitat.  We have a new format for this year’s prize giving event.  This will take place at Fingask Castle, Perthshire, and pupils, their parents and teachers will all be invited to come and enjoy a day of activities including falconry displays, gun dogs at work, art workshops in the castle, game cookery and tasting and estate activities organised by Scotland's Regional Moorland Groups.  Of course, our regular prizes of farm visits and art workshops will also be awarded, as well as art materials, books, vouchers, and certificates.
