As well as expert opinion, technical advice and real customer case studies, this year’s publication also features a range of innovative new products designed to help growers prepare their land for agri-environment changes driven by post-Brexit government policy.

Getting ahead

Speaking of the new product developments, Richard Barnes, Kings Sales Manager explains, “Natural Capital – soil, water and biodiversity – are now at the forefront of farming, highlighted even more by the recent changes to Ecological Focus Area (EFA) rules, the introduction of simplified offers within Countryside Stewardship and the ongoing delivery of AECS in Scotland. The Kings catalogue includes new products and mixes that are fully-compliant and support growers to prepare for the future, by getting ahead and aligning their farms with future policy.”

One of the new mixes to feature in the Kings portfolio is the EFA Fallow Mix. Simple-to-establish and low maintenance, this option complies with the EFA fallow option – ideal for growers who want to get the most from poor or unproductive land. In addition, the new Poacher Club Root blend has been devised to support growers with concerns about the disease and the Early Cob Maize mix is another exciting option that delivers nutritious cobs for pheasants and partridges.

Supplementary Feeding

As well as an expansion of the specialist crop portfolio, Kings also offers more tools to help farmers support farmland birds. “Supplementary feeding is now a common stewardship option and at this time of year farmland birds are particularly vulnerable, often at risk of starvation as they struggle through the ‘hungry-gap’,” explains Richard. “Recent weather across the country has featured some severe frosts and snowfall which only makes it harder for them. This makes supplementary feeding even more critical for their survival into the breeding season.”

To help agreement holders with this option, Kings offers seed mixtures, feeding buckets and a new Supplementary Feeding Booklet. Featuring a handy ID guide, the book allows for detailed recording to support growers with compliance requirements as they feed farmland birds through this vital period.
