Further to job creation and important habitat, hedgerows offer us an underappreciated climate solution (“How hedgerows could create 25,000 jobs”, Sep 6).
England’s hedgerows span 100 times the length of its motorways and, crucially, sequester carbon at twice the rate of woodland. It is important that, in addition to rewarding farmers and estate managers for planting new hedgerows, any policy should support them to look after what we already have and improve and enhance existing hedgerows.
