Government Launches £25 Million Species Survival Fund - Apply Now

Wetlands 2

The government has launched a significant new fund aimed at creating and restoring natural habitats on a large scale. With a budget of £25 million, the Species Survival Fund aims to halt the decline of various species and support the government's key target of species conservation. By providing grants of up to £3 million, this funding initiative aims to tackle habitat loss, protect fragile ecosystems, and foster nature-rich landscapes that are conducive to wildlife.

Enhancing Habitats and Protecting Species

The Species Survival Fund will finance projects focused on restoring and connecting wildlife-rich habitats across different landscapes. Additionally, it will enhance the resilience of specific species such as reptiles, birds, and pollinators. This funding aims to create nature-rich environments that support a diverse range of habitats, including grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands. By implementing these projects, the fund will contribute to the conservation of species and safeguard their natural habitats.

Creating Green Jobs and Opportunities

Alongside its conservation objectives, the Species Survival Fund seeks to encourage the creation of green jobs and vocational employment opportunities. By supporting local initiatives, the fund will facilitate the establishment of nature projects that benefit both the environment and the economy. Environmental organisations, National Park Authorities, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs), local authorities, farmers, and land managers are all invited to apply for funding and collaborate with the government in creating transformative nature projects.

Local Nature Recovery Strategies

To drive nature recovery at a local level, 48 individual local authorities will receive allocations from a £14 million funding pool. This allocation will enable them to work closely with their communities to develop customized nature recovery strategies. These Local Nature Recovery Strategies will consider the unique geography of each area, ensuring that the most effective approaches to restoring nature are implemented. Collaboration with local stakeholders, including farmers and school children, will be crucial in mapping out the necessary actions to restore nature and meet England's nature targets.
