Experience magical breeding birds on a GWCT Scotland Moor Walk

Curlew in flightGWCT Scotland is inviting supporters and interested members of the public to join them for guided walks over a select number of Scottish grouse moors in April 2026. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy privileged access to some of Scotland’s most spectacular landscapes, learn about upland land management from practitioners and landowners, and witness the breathtaking biodiversity found on managed moorland.

GWCT Senior Advisor Dr Felix Meister, who is organising the events, said: “In Scotland, debates around game and wildlife management have been centred on the uplands, and topics such as legal predator control and muirburn have proved to be highly emotive and polarising. Often, however, these debates betray a lack of understanding of the management operations themselves as well as the research and best-practice guidance underpinning them. Our Moor Walks are educational events, assisted by practitioners and GWCT experts, and anyone interested in our uplands is welcome.”

The walks will be followed by a barbecue and drinks. All the food is being generously provided and cooked by Castle Game Scotland.

Felix continued: “In addition to learning and great food and drink, our Moor Walks offer a rare opportunity to experience moorland wildlife at its busiest. As birds are going into the breeding season, attendees can expect to see and hear not only red grouse, but also curlew, snipe, lapwing, golden plover, red kite, hen harrier, and perhaps even a golden eagle or two.”

Each Moor Walk will start at 10am on the dates and locations below:

  • Saturday 18 April: Glenogil Estate, Angus
  • Sunday 19 April: Garrows Estate, Perthshire
  • Saturday 25 April: Burncastle Estate, Scottish Borders
  • Sunday 26 April: Moy Estate, Inverness-shire
