Solitary Bee Urgent Appeal: Bring the Buzz Back

Make space for solitary bees

A problem is brewing in the undergrowth. Without action, the soundtrack of summer, the hum of solitary bees moving from flower to flower could fall silent. With your help, we can bring their buzz back across the countryside.

The challenge

Ashy mining beeWith over 240 species in the UK, solitary bees are among our most important pollinators, playing a vital role in supporting wildflowers and crops. But unlike honeybees and bumblebees, they nest alone, often directly in the ground — and safe nesting places are becoming harder to find.

Despite their importance, solitary bees are in serious decline. Since 1980, their numbers have fallen by 32%. Flowers are essential but flowers alone are not enough. Without safe places to nest, these remarkable pollinators cannot recover.

The solution

Mining beeOur research shows that even small patches of bare ground can make a big difference, giving solitary bees the space they need to nest and thrive.

With your support, we can study how solitary bees use different habitats, develop practical solutions for farmers, and build the evidence needed to support pollinators at scale.

The impact

By helping us secure space for solitary bees, you can play a direct part in protecting the next generation and keeping the buzz of summer alive.
