The walk will be led by GWCT Head of Fisheries, Dylan Roberts, accompanied by Prof Chris Stoate, former Head of Research at GWCT Allerton Project, farmer and farmer cluster facilitator, and will take in all aspects of trout fishing and river management and the work that is required to maintain such a unique river.

Host to royalty and shooting parties, the vast Gopsall Estate and House were once in the Curzon family, but were bought up by the Crown Estate by 1932. After the Second World War the house fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1952. The estate was sold in 2017 to farm tenants and video game entrepreneur Chris Stamper.

The River Sence was an important source of fish for the Hall before 1925, with a full-time river keeper in Edwardian times. The fishing club is 100 years old this year and has been managed as a trout (and, more recently, grayling) fishery for all that time. There is five miles of fishing on the River Sence, which is well-managed by the syndicate of 45 members, with regular bank trimming, weirs and pools.

Tickets £20 per head, to include light refreshments following the walk at The Tea Rooms, Sparkenhoe Farm, CV13 6JX by kind permission of the Clarke family.
