David BainesDr David Baines is the GWCT’s Director of Upland Research, supervising staff at our Teesdale base. He has worked for the Trust since 1989, starting his career in the Scottish Highlands on black grouse and capercaillie before returning to Teesdale in 1997 to work on parasite-induced population dynamics of red grouse, raptor-grouse conflict resolution, and the impacts of predation on breeding waders. dbaines@gwct.org.uk

 

 

Philip WarrenDr Philip Warren is the Project Officer for the Merlin Magic project, based at our upland’s office in Upper Teesdale in northern England. Phil has been with the Trust for 22 years, and during this period completed his part-time PhD with the University of Durham investigating red grouse population dynamics at a landscape scale. He has since played a lead role on the Trust’s black grouse research and conservation delivery work in both England and Scotland, whilst contributing to long-term research studies on red grouse and moorland breeding waders. pwarren@gwct.org.uk

 

 

Georgia IstedGeorgia Isted has joined the team as the Magic Merlin Project Assistant. Having recently finished a Masters in Biology from Cardiff University, Georgia spent time in the USA studying the movement ecology of North American raptors. She is looking forward to helping further our understanding of merlin populations in England as part of the project. gisted@gwct.org.uk

 

 

 

Beth TilleyBethany Tilley is one of our Uplands placement students for 2021-22. She is currently studying BSc Ecology and Wildlife Conservation at the University of Reading. Bethany was previously a gamekeeper before going to university, giving her a keen interest in conservation and wildlife. Lucy MarsdenLucy Marsden is also one of the Uplands placement students at Eggleston in Teesdale, assisting with the Merlin Project. She is currently studying Countryside and Environmental Management at Harper Adams University. She has previously been involved with gamekeeping and deer management across the North of England and Scotland with a keen interest in the countryside and wildlife.
