Amber Hopgood

Science Writer

Amber HopgoodAmber joined the GWCT in July 2021 as a Science Writer, tasked with reviewing and summarising published research to help make it accessible to a wider audience and tackle scientific misinformation through topic briefing sheets, paper summaries, fact checks and blogs.

“I love working with the Trust’s highly knowledgeable scientists on different areas of ecological and countryside science,” says Amber. She is a passionate conservationist and is halfway through an MSc in Biological Recording and Ecological Monitoring. As a volunteer she also leads her local amphibian and reptile group, where she has recently completed a proposal for a biodiversity corridor in the West Midlands aimed at boosting regional populations of amphibian and reptile species. “It was a proud moment to see the first pond being dug,” says Amber, “and I look forward to helping guide the project in years to come.”

“As a young woman in conservation I have definitely experienced my fair share of being underestimated,” says Amber, “but perseverance, faith in my ability and knowledge, and years of hard work to get where I wanted to be have paid off.”

For anyone else considering a career in this field, Amber says: “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. If there is something you are passionate about or want to do, let that drive you forward and be your own cheerleader until you reach that goal.”
