Mitigating losses against net benefits: our letter to The Telegraph

WindturbinesSir

It is unfortunate those seeking a ban on all forms of wind power generation have sought to use bird deaths as a means to support their cause (RSPB installs turbine that can kill birds, February 29). Many constructions, including powerlines and lighthouses, kill birds. We mitigate and balance these losses against net benefits.

Our understanding of wind turbine impacts is still evolving. The greatest concern is the poor evidence base from which to plan mitigation, especially where multiple large turbines fields start to cluster in a landscape. It would be disappointing if entrenched views hindered this vital discussion.
