Game management and coronavirus – an update for England

Following government advice issued this week, coronavirus restrictions for England have been eased somewhat from 13 May, but please note this advice does not apply in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. Recreational activities, and travel to and from them within England, are now allowed, provided that you only engage in these with members of your own household group. You are also allowed to meet up with one other person, provided social distancing measures are in place.

The following rules apply

  1. You may travel any distance, but only with members of your own household group in the same vehicle. If you meet a friend, they must travel independently.
  2. You must observe the rules on social distancing at all times.

This means that trapping and shooting of pest species can go ahead, as can deer stalking and fishing. Also, habitat management work, feeding of game and wildlife, and related activities are all permitted. All this work must clearly be carried out within the law, and if shooting is involved, the GWCT would advise that you carry the relevant shotgun and/or firearm certificate.
