BASC and the GWCT have teamed up to offer a new course aimed at improving shooting skills and shoot management.
The next Shooting for the Future event will take place at Ripley Castle, North Yorkshire, on 8 and 9 May. The first day will and concentrate on shooting techniques and the second day on shoot management techniques. You can take the two days together, or just book one day.
Day one begins with an interactive session discussing the issues surrounding wounding loss in the field, and the factors responsible for poor shooting. There will then be a number of practical activities including a shooting skill exercise, range-judging and a patterning workshop. The afternoon session will focus on how to shoot better within your capabilities; BASC shotgun coaches will spend two to three hours with each group working on their individual shooting skills. The day will end with a constructive feedback session.
Recent GWCT research has led to the development of guidelines for gamebird release that maximise broader conservation benefit while minimising any damage caused by the birds themselves. Following the guidelines will help shoots to maintain the health and welfare of their birds, ensuring good returns and high quality sport. These issues will be addressed during the morning presentations on day two, followed by an afternoon visit to a working shoot, to see hands-on how to put the guidelines into practice.
