GWCT & BASC jointly deliver an innovative course aimed at improving shooting skills and shoot management while learning about the latest best practice in predator control, cover crops, woodland management and game bird releasing.
The day will start with a presentation from BASC on improving your shooting and then a talk from GWCT experts on game bird management, which maximises shoot productivity and conservation benefits. There will be a guided tour of the GWCT’s showcase game shoot, giving the opportunity to see a shoot run to best practice and ask questions.
The afternoon will focus on shooting skills with BASC-accredited coaches and will cover range judging and patterning. Delegates will have the chance to have their technique analysed using BASC’s state-of-the-art shooting simulator.
The day will finish with a simulated game drive on one of Loddington’s iconic pheasant drives. Participants will be supervised by loaders who will be on hand to provide guidance and assistance.
Recent GWCT research has led to the development of guidelines for gamebird releasing that maximise broader conservation benefit while minimising any damage caused by the birds themselves. Following the best practice guidelines, utilising predator control and planting the optimal cover crops will help shoots to maintain the health and welfare of their birds, ensuring good returns and high quality sport. These issues will be addressed, followed by a visit to a working shoot, to see how to put the guidelines into practice.
