The Sutton Estate, situated in a glorious position on the banks of the River Deben, was in the Quilter family from the early 1900s until November 2018, when it was purchased by successful farmer and business owner, Paul Clarke. The Estate is now contract farmed by James Foskett of James Foskett Farms, who also runs the shooting operation.
The Estate runs to 2000 acres and includes a cultivated area of well drained soils with a cropping rotation including, amongst other things, potatoes, onions, parsnips, maize, vining peas, cereals and outdoor pigs. The Estate also includes large areas of permanent pasture together with parcels of woodland and river foreshore. The Estate hosted a family shoot throughout the Quilter’s tenure and now provides up to 20 days of sport for James’s and Paul’s family and friends together with sold days.
The Estate includes a number of Sites of Special Scientific Interest and is bounded on the west by the River Deben, which is a Ramsar site, being an area of wetland of international importance. The recent policy changes and consultations regarding the release of game birds within the vicinity of such sites has presented challenges to James and he has worked closely with the advisory team at GWCT in navigating a way through those issues. Both James and Roger Draycott, Head of Advisory at GWCT, will be available on the day to discuss and explain.
