This year’s Christmas card collection designed exclusively for the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust features black grouse in a snowy winter landscape painted by guest artist Martin Ridley.
Available from the GWCT shop, the collection also includes new designs by some of the country’s best known wildlife artists and one by popular cartoonist Loon called ‘Bang goes the Boxing Day Shoot’, featuring pheasants getting drunk by a feeder marked ‘The Merry Feeder’.
All the other motifs for the 2024 GWCT Christmas card collection are based on exclusive new paintings by Ashley Boon, Rodger McPhail, Jason Lowes and Owen Williams.
Commenting on the choice of the ‘Black grouse lek’ as a guest design, Dr Phil Warren, the GWCT’s black grouse expert, says: “Having spent decades studying black grouse in order to help and conserve the species, this card symbolises the important work the GWCT does.
“If future generation are to enjoy seeing these striking birds, with their black iridescent plumage sparkling in contrast to the white snow in winter, we need to halt their decline and help to expand their range beyond their current stronghold in the north of England and Scotland.”
As part of the GWCT’s Black Grouse Range Expansion Project, birds are being translocated from the Pennines to selected sites in the North York Moors, where it is hoped they will begin to breed again for the first time in nearly 200 years.
By purchasing your Christmas cards from the GWCT here, you can help raise funds continue this vital work and support the trust’s other research and conservation work.
Each pack includes 10 high quality cards with the greeting 'With Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year' and cost £5.95.
