Abstract

There is relatively little information available on the ecological potential of Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) willow and poplar in the UK - well established managed plantations are few (though this situation is changing) and a coordinated programme of research has only just begun. A handful of studies have however been undertaken and anecdotal information is also available. A comparison with other similar habitat types can also provide a useful insight in a general sense.
This paper will attempt to draw on these sources to provide an insight into the potential for SRC as habitat for wildlife and game. It will also outline the findings of baseline visits made to the majority of UK SRC sites by The Game Conservancy during the 1992/1993 winter.
