Turnips and kale

TurnipSome of the better, ploughable ground is used to grow forage turnips and kale (Brassica crops). This provides additional/extended grazing for our sheep flock during the winter months. Turnips are a good source of winter forage as the bulb of the turnip is high in energy and protein which help carry the sheep through till spring.

Kale is an important cover crop and the following information is taken from our guide to cover crops:

Advantages of Kale:

  • This crop, grown well, is the king of game cover crops - especially if it is left into a second year.
  • It provides warm cover, is very hardy and produces stacks of small seeds in the second year that many birds love to eat.
  • Great to include in a mix.
  • Economic, as it lasts for two years.

Disadvantages of Kale:

  • It can be difficult to establish. However, you can buy treated seed to help beat flea beetle attack.
