THE Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) and BASIS Registration LTD have designed a course for candidates to gain a professional qualification in farmland conservation.
The three-day course, which is being held at GWCT’s Allerton Project in Loddington, Leicestershire is designed for those advising on cross-compliance, environmental management, conservation or stewardship options and shoot management.
To implement effective farmland environmental management, careful attention needs to be paid to a wide range of issues such as soil, air, water and wildlife, all of which are covered during the course.
Organiser Jim Egan, who is head of training and development at Allerton Project, said: “There has never been a more important time to really understand how farming and the environment can work together.
“At present, there appears to be one certainty for the future of British agriculture and that is the drive to ensure good environmental practice can sit alongside profitable food production.
“To achieve effective farmland conservation management, consideration needs to be given to a wide range of topics – this course offers a fantastic opportunity for people working in both agriculture and the environment to gain an understanding of how all these aspects of management interact.”
The Allerton Project team has successfully delivered this training to over 300 land agents, agronomists, farmland conservation advisers, land managers and gamekeepers.
Previous participants have said “the trainers are great - very knowledgeable and good communicators” and “great venue and good that we could go out onto a commercial farm and view measures put into place”.
No other qualifications are needed prior to attending the course, which runs from Tuesday June 26th to Thursday June 28th.
Tuition is two-and-a-half days, with an examination by BASIS on the afternoon of the third day.
The cost of the course is £399 + VAT per person for the three days of training, with lunch and refreshments included. The BASIS examination fee is a separate charge of £210 (VAT exempt).
