After a dismal year regarding COVID-19 the coming season has finally begun to look brighter, game days are sought after, and we can all sigh with relief that normality will hopefully return. Unfortunately, on the other hand the weather has failed to be as bright as hoped, arable crops are still yet to be combined, along with various hay fields making wandering released pheasants a challenge to dog back to the surrounding pens.

A public consultation was launched on Thursday 19th August by NRW, on the approach to regulating the shooting and trapping of wild birds and the destruction of eggs and nests. It includes open questions on their approach and proposals.

With the gamebird releasing season in full swing, the GWCT is reminding all game managers operating on or within 500m of EU protected sites of the new requirement to inform Natural England the number of gamebirds released and their location Details of any relevant SSSI consent under which the activity is operating is also required.

GWCT Scotland first started using the Epicollect5 App at our demonstration farm in Aberdeenshire to maintain predator control and habitat management data. This type of information gathering paved the way for thinking about how we can further equip keepers and land managers with a simple, effective tool to record a variety of management information.

On 12th May 2021 Defra published their licence to release gamebirds on European sites and within 500m of their boundary (GL43). Natural England would like to remind you that they are offering an online Advice Service to help shoot managers and gamekeepers decide whether they can operate under the conditions of the general licence or will require an individual licence for the release of gamebirds.
